The Puma Marching Band

Fall semester the Marching Band serves primarily as a spirit group in support of the BHS varsity football team. Each members fine tune motor skills and develop their instrumental abilities through the performance of marching band drill outdoors. In addition to half-time performances at all varsity football games, this band performs at pep rallies, parades, concerts and contests.

Symphonic Band

Mid October starts our concert season where the symphonic band prepares concert tunes ranging from standard band repertoire to various movie and Disney medleys. They meet everyday and focus on tone quality, rhythm studies, scales and technique as well as their music selections for their winter and spring concerts and their spring music festivals.

Intermediate Band

Intermediate Band is for students that have never played an instrument before or want to switch to a new instrument. In intermediate band students will be prepped for advanced band. It lasts for one year and then directly feeds into the advanced band the year after.

Puma Jazz and Combo

Jazz Band is a class designed for those students who are interested in a more detailed study of American jazz music.  A wide range of jazz and jazz rock music will be performed. Much emphasis is placed on improvisation and the skills of jazz harmony and rhythm. This ensemble has a proud partnership with the renown SFJAZZ where a jazz professional comes to the school and runs rehearsal every Monday and Friday during class. Although a new addition to the Burton Band Program, this ensemble participates in various concerts and festivals throughout the year.

Rock Club

Burton High School Rock Band is a after school club ensemble lead by Paul Caoili that explores the pop culture of rock. They gig in various community outreach projects. They often meet in practice room six.

Puma Percussion Ensemble

Burton High School Winter Percussion is comprised of students in grades 9-12 who play in the percussion sections of Symphonic Band and Marching Band. Students who usually play wind instruments but who wish to learn percussion may also participate. Winter Percussion is an extracurricular activity and meets during the Advanced Percussion class and several after school and weekend rehearsals.  Members work on a show with a theme or storyline expressed through music, choreography, drill, costuming, and characterization. Winter Percussion performs at local and national level competitions, as well as at school rallies.

Color Guard / Winter Guard

This is our newest addition to our band program this year. Our color guard's purpose is to interpret the music the marching band is playing through synchronized spinning of flags, sabers, rifles, and through dance. Winter guard is an indoor color guard activity. Unlike traditional color guard, winter guard is performed indoors, usually in a gymnasium or an indoor arena and perform their choreographed show to music of their choice. This group meets after school for an hour each day and is coached by Amy Hou.
